Fagerholm

Fagerholm Private Island

A private island in Finland’s Turku archipelago, Fagerholm is designed entirely around exclusivity. What was once a working customs and coast guard station is now a fully private-use retreat, where everything is shaped around one group at a time.
Set within the Archipelago National Park, the island offers a quieter, more intentional version of Nordic luxury. Nothing is overdone. The focus is on space, nature and a sense of complete privacy.
Fagerholm works best for small groups, whether private or corporate, looking for something immersive but still easy to navigate operationally.. Through its Green Island Initiative, the island operates with reduced reliance on external resources, using geothermal heating, solar energy and its own desalination system. Waste is carefully managed, and the kitchen works with local, seasonal suppliers to keep things as low-impact as possible. It’s an ongoing process, built into how the island runs day to day.

Key initiatives include:
Replacing oil with geothermal heating.
Installing solar panels on the boathouse to offset summer energy needs.
Producing fresh water onsite through our own desalination facility.
Sorting, composting, or transporting waste for specialist recycling to minimise landfill and unnecessary transport.
Prioritising low-impact hospitality products and services wherever possible.
Supporting and investing in local entrepreneurs and sustainable innovations.

Accommodation
Accommodation is intentionally residential rather than hotel-like. Guests stay together in the former coast guard building.
There are 12 bedrooms, all under one roof, alongside shared living spaces and an open-plan kitchen.

Rooms are simple and comfortable:
Finnish-built wooden beds and quality linens
Views across the sea or surrounding greenery
A calm, pared-back design
Some rooms are en suite, others share facilities, reinforcing the house-style setup rather than a formal hotel structure.
The main shared space is a light-filled atrium used for meals and gatherings, alongside smaller areas for quieter moments.

Guest rooms and communal spaces are serviced daily with water and energy conservation in mind, delivering comfort consciously.

The experience
Fagerholm is not a hotel in the traditional sense. The island adapts to the group using it.
Days tend to move between time outdoors and time together. That might mean morning sauna and sea swims, followed by meetings or time on the water, and long, shared meals in the evening.

Experiences are simple but well executed:
Exploring the archipelago by boat or kayak
Sauna rituals and cold-water immersion
Seasonal dining, often outdoors or by the fire
Cooking experiences and informal gatherings
